Social Events and Trips 2023

Here’s an overview of what opportunities the club has for you this coming year. Some of the events have limited places and all communication/booking will be on Spond so, if you haven’t already done so, get the app downloaded, set up your account and request to join using the code BOCPW.

February

Friday 10thPizza and Puncture session at Mapdec. A relaxed and informal look at dealing with punctures, changing inners, plugging tubeless, topping up sealant, top hacks for split tyres etc

March

Monday 13th – Jumble/Secondhand at Castle Street Centre (evening). Set up from 5pm. Sale 6-8pm. Tables £5. Refreshments available, profit from this for Wheels for All.

Thursday 23rd – Social and Knowledge session with Komoot at Gan Yam Brewery. Katherine Moore (Kommot and Unpaved Podcast) and Emily Wormald (Lakes Gravel Gang) will show us how to best build awesome routes to ride: On and off road. Why Komoot? Komoot gives you totally free access to your local area maps. Map and/or voice navigation -put your phone in your back pocket and it’ll tell you where to go!! If this is something you’ve never done/have struggled with, or just fancy a beer and a chat, come along. PLEASE DOWNLOAD KOMOOT AND SET UP YOUR ACCOUNT BEFORE YOU ARRIVE (in your full name!!!). April

Saturday 22nd April – Saturday 29th April – Mallorca trip. The trip is about club members coming together to ride on some fantastic roads and share social time on a beautiful sunny (fingers crossed) island. It’s not a training camp (although it can be if you want that) and it’s not just about cycling either, people have also been swimming, running, rock climbing and sightseeing during the week. Sunday April 30th to Monday 1St May – the inaugural Kendal Cycle Festival. To be held in the Market Square and on New Road. This free family friendly festival is for everyone whether they are new to or experienced with bikes. The programme will include: Bike demos, pump track, talks, presentations, films, cycle powered ceilidh, demonstration bike rides, a bike repair café, bike and cycling gear swap shop and trade stands. Kendal Cycle Club are proud to be supporting the festival by sponsoring the key speaker: Jenny Graham – Guinness World Record holder for Womens Solo Around The World (which she did unsupported). Jenny will be arriving in Kendal by bike. She is riding from the New Forest to Inverness promoting her new book along the way. Coffee First Then The World !! We hope she will join us for a ride out in the morning before her talk in the market square marquee at 3.30pm Sunday.

May

Every Thursday throughout May you can join Mapdec for a coached skills session on descending hills. Small groups.

June

Sunday 11th – Women’s Big Day Out 2023! 50, 70 and 100 mile scenic routes. Mobile mechanics will be strategically placed to offer assistance/recovery if needed. Free water bottle and a beer (or other) at The New Union on return to Kendal

July

Saturday 1st – The Staveley 3 Valleys Challenge (formerly The Sam Houghton Mountain Bike Challenge) This is a timed charity mountain bike ride starting and finishing at the Mill Yard, Staveley and covering the Longsleddale, Kentmere & Troutbeck Valleys and taking in Garburn Pass.  All proceeds from this year’s event will again be donated to Cancer Research UK. Link for more info and entering: https://staveleychallenge.co.uk/index.html

Saturday 8th – Tour de Staveley. The Tour de Staveley offers participants a choice of two fabulous routes on open roads – a 28 mile undulating course or a longer 48.5 mile version taking in some challenging Lakeland hills. Starting and finishing from Wheelbase cycle store in Staveley, the event offers a great introduction to group riding and is run in partnership with Kendal Cycle Club and the Wheels for All initiative.

14-16th – Women’s Weekend Away at The Kettlewell Hostel. Breakfast and evening meals included. Stunning Yorkshire scenery. Suitable for MTB/gravel and road bikes. The most fun you can have over a weekend for £100 and the best hostel you’ll ever go to! Relaxed and social – just like minded, friendly people getting together. Oodles of hot water, strong wifi, bike storage, garden, rooms sleep between 2 and 6, bar and…book shop!

August

Saturday 19th – KCC Ride and Social. 50, 75, 100 and The Killer 100 (including ‘fastest wins’ up Great Dun Fell) mile routes. Feed stations and back up. Free bottle. Return to Gan Yam Brewery for a beer (or other) on the club, pies, raffle and social.

October

November

Friday 10th – AGM. Kendal Cycle Club is proud to have almost a 50/50 split with men and women on the committee.  Christine Briggs (Women and Social), Helen Jackson (Racing and so much more), Verity Applethwaite (Off Road) and Frances Watkins (Volunteer), Christine Nelson (Welfare) and Michaela Irving (Juniors). If you are interested in joining/helping the committee please get in touch with any one of the committee for a chat. Variety is good for the Club and new/fresh ideas are always welcome.

Social Events and Trips 2024

April

Saturday 20th – Saturday 27th April – Mallorca Trip. A week of cycling on the beautiful island of Mallorca. Last year the Club had 50 people staying at the Seaclub in Alcudia with daily rides for Green, Blue, Red and Black groups.

July

Friday 5th – Monday 8th – Women’s Weekend Away from Portpartick to St Bees. 24 places available on a first come basis. Join us for a truly memorable weekend riding the stunning coastline from Portpartick to St Bees. We have arranged some lovely accommodation for you at 2023 prices. All rooms will be twins. Breakfast is included as are two evening meals. Your luggage will be transferred each day by van. There will be regular meetups with the support van for water and snacks.
